Implement a plan

When a plan is right, you choose how it becomes code. The agent can build it in the chat, a workflow can run it in the background, or you can copy the plan and take it elsewhere. Implementing a plan or running it as a workflow also approves it, so there's no separate approve step. Copying it doesn't change its status.

Before you start

Choose how to implement it

  • Implement has the agent build the plan in the worktree's chat. It suits smaller, contained changes.
  • Workflow runs the plan through a workflow, a saved series of steps that runs as one job while you do other work. It suits bigger changes, and most plans you spent time on.
  • Copy copies the plan's Markdown, so you can hand it to another tool or keep it.

Act from the chat

When the agent finishes a plan, the composer asks Implement this plan?

  1. Choose one:
    • Yes, implement this plan starts the work in this chat.
    • Run it as a workflow opens the Run workflow dialog.
  2. If you chose a workflow, select one from the list, such as Implementation (Autopilot). The list shows only workflows that can start from a plan.
  3. Set any inputs the workflow shows, then select Run.

If you closed the prompt, select the Plan ready chip beside + to bring it back.

Act from the plan

  1. Open the plan from the Plans card, or in its panel.
  2. Select Execute, then choose Workflow or Implement. To copy the plan, select Copy beside Execute.

Workflow opens the same Run workflow dialog. While the agent is revising the plan, Execute is turned off.

While the plan is being implemented, and after it succeeds, Open takes the place of Execute and goes to the chat or run doing the work. To run the plan again, select the three-dot icon (More actions), then Run again as workflow or Implement again in chat. Both are turned off while the plan is being implemented.

Built-in workflows for plans

  • Implementation (Autopilot) refines the plan, implements it, tests the result, and keeps going while it records issues that may need your attention. To have it commit, push, and open pull requests when it finishes, set the push_and_create_prs input to True. It's False by default.
  • Refine Plan has two models review the plan and improve it.

To browse them, select Workflows in the sidebar, then Library. Select Filter, then Source, then Built-in.

Follow the plan's status

The plan's status shows on its row in the Plans card and in the plan panel's header:

  • Pending: the plan is waiting for you.
  • Implementing in chat or Implementing in workflow: the agent or a workflow is building it. Select Open to follow it.
  • Finished in chat or Implemented in workflow: the work finished successfully. Open goes to the chat or the run.
  • Approved: you acted on the plan, but nothing is running and nothing has finished, for example after a run failed. A note beside the status says what happened.
  • Dismissed: you turned off Plan mode while the plan was waiting for you.

If a workflow run fails or is stopped, the plan shows "Workflow failed" or "Workflow cancelled" with View run. If the work in a chat fails or is stopped, it shows "Chat failed" or "Chat stopped" with View chat. In the plan panel, the N linked button, such as 2 linked, lists every run started from the plan, with its status and when it started.

Cursor plans

You can read, comment on, and share a plan from a Cursor chat. The app can't implement it or run it as a workflow, so the prompt shows Implementation unavailable, and Workflow and Implement are turned off in Execute. Select Copy instead.
